Anonymous NFL General Manager Shares Reaction to Quarterback Trade Rumor

Anonymous NFL GM Shares Insight on Quarterback Trade Rumor in San Francisco 49ers Speculation arises as the 49ers consider options with Trey Lance and Brock Purdy.

On Wednesday morning, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network revealed that the 49ers have been receiving inquiries about Trey Lance. An unnamed NFL general manager, who is not currently in the market for a quarterback, confirmed that 49ers GM John Lynch has been open to discussions regarding the 2021 No. 3 pick.

According to the GM, “John taking calls on him was probably the worst kept secret since Indy,” as he told theScore’s Jordan Schultz. “I know they’ve listened.” The GM also acknowledged that Lance is young, talented, and on a rookie contract, making him an attractive option for potential suitors. However, he also noted that Sam Darnold has contract incentives and Brock Purdy has an elbow issue, which could impact their trade values. He believes that it would require a substantial offer to acquire Lance.

49ers defied buying Lance

Despite the 49ers investing significant draft capital to acquire Lance, he spent his rookie season as a backup to Jimmy Garoppolo and had his first season as a starter cut short due to an ankle injury in Week 2. On the other hand, Purdy has seemingly impressed and earned the starting spot by leading the team to the NFC Championship Game. If the 49ers are confident in Purdy’s return from offseason elbow surgery, trading Lance for the right price could be a viable option.
